The Māori phrase Kai Waho can be translated as outdoor cuisine. It can also describe a master, or teacher, of the ways of the wilderness.
For guests at Tamau Pā, on the beautiful tribal lands of the Tuwharetoa iwi, both these meanings merge in an unforgettable and unique cultural, food and wilderness experience.
Tamau Pā, our comfortable whare (cabin), is situated on the eastern rim of the Taupo basin. Set in picturesque surroundings, at more than 900 metres, it is accessible only by air or via an exhilarating 35 minute off-road journey in a 4-wheel drive. Guests have exclusive access to a magnificent wilderness boasting native flora and fauna in a sub-alpine forest. The beautiful Ripia River runs through this stunning terrain.
One or multi day Kai Waho experiences are available year round. Join us on our one day package 'Ko Tahi te Rā' - Free your Spirit or, if a longer visit appeals, experience 'Te Mata Aho' - Awakening Mind and Body.
Advanced Cultural Learning is offered as an optional extra if you wish to immerse yourself spiritually in the Māori way of life.
